Homeschool Parents Book Club at B&N

In June we had our first homeschool book club, for parents interested in homeschooling, or who already are homeschooling. The book I had picked for the first discussion was "The First Year of Homeschooling Your Child: Your Complete Guide to Getting Off to the Right Start," by Linda Dobson. There was a very nice group of parents there, with a range of experiences and homeschooling styles. We strayed from the topic of the book into whatever questions parents had, and I expect we'll do this at each meeting. The object for me is not to cover the book, but to provide homeschool support.

Our next meeting will be on August 20th. July got pushed out by Harry Potter madness. :) So from now on the meetings will be monthly, on the 3rd Monday of the month, from 6:30 to 8pm, at the Barracks Rd Shopping Center's Barnes and Noble. There is no child care available, but older kids that can be by themselves in the store are welcome, as are nursing babies. Grandparents or other relatives can be encouraged to join you in the discussions, as well.

At this point, we will still be using "The First Year of Homeschooling Your Child" in August, as not everyone had read it yet for that first meeting, and there is also a lot to cover there. If anyone would like to suggest a second book to discuss, please let me know.

People are welcome to join the book club at any time. I also will be glad to explain the legal aspects of homeschooling in Virginia. In the future, books will be chosen according to a specific topic that parents are interested in discussing. If you give me your ideas for topics, I can track down a good book to lead the club in.

I look forward to seeing you in August!
