Tell Us a Tale at the Gravity Lounge

Yesterday I took the kids to the Gravity Lounge on the Downtown Mall to meet up with some friends and hear the live recording of Tell Us a Tale, "the only children's radio program in Central Virginia:"

Serving Up Latkes & Roast Beast: a Christmas & Chanukah Extravaganza

Location: Gravity Lounge (103 South First Street, Charlottesville - off the downtown mall)

Join Peter and Jen for a special holiday show that will be recorded for later airing on radio stations in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand!

In between the Christmas and Chanukah stories (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, How Murray Saved Christmas, etc…), there will be all different varieties of music. The scheduled acts are the Front Porch Americana sound of Jan Smith, Cajun/Zydeco swing of Matty Metcalfe & Crewe d’Bayou (with special guests John D'earth and Dawn Thompson), Gypsy Jazz stylings of the Rick Olivarez Trio, and klezmer sounds of Simchah!.

The stories were fun. I especially liked "Moishe's Miracle," and Emily and Thomas both loved the one about the goblin in the well and the magic dreidels--called, naturally, "The Magic Dreidels."

Matty Metcalfe is Emily's guitar instructor. On his website he had this to say about his band's upcoming performance:

We'll be doing lots of New Orleans-inspired Holiday songs, including the Louis Armstrong hits 'Christmastime in New Orleans' and 'Dat you, Santa Claus?' featuring our favorite guests John D'earth on trumpet and Dawn Thompson on percussion and vocals.

He was playing the accordion, and the New Orleans sounds were a fun twist on the holiday songs.

Peter, the storyteller, said this show will air next Sunday on WTJU and other stations.
