Black Ratsnakes in the Chicken Coop and Around the House

Our lovely black ratsnakes [actually eastern ratsnakes now]--we have at least three that keep coming around. Click the album to see all the pictures.

We don't mind them so much, except they do eat the hens' eggs. But at least they discourage the copperheads.

Ok, quick update here--I've been informed that the black ratsnake in the Eastern US has been reclassified to the eastern ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis). And here's a link to the Virginia Herpetological Society. The Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries has not updated their website as to the reclassification yet. However the link to the species booklet does show the new name.
